No Culture is Incorrect

“My Grandmother Washes Her Feet in the Sink of the Bathroom at Sears” is a very interesting poem by Mohja Kahf. It was the last line in stanza 3 that flows into the fourth stanza that caught my attention. The poem talks about the author’s Muslim grandmother who does exactly as described in the title because it is part of her culture. The line that stood out to me reads, “My grandmother knows one culture — the right one, / as do these matrons of the Middle West” (Kahf). I am very much in support of this claim because although the cultures are different, they are both correct because there is no such thing as an incorrect culture. It all depends on how you were raised. For the poet’s grandmother, washing feet is an important ritual even in public, while to many Americans, feet are seen as nasty and not to be washed or touched in public.
